Abdominal Scan 

An abdominal scan is to show the liver, gall bladder, kidneys, pancreas, aorta  & spleen.

For this you need to starve for 6 to 8 hours beforehand, but can drink water, squash, black tea & coffee. This allows us to see the gall bladder when it’s not contracted and enables good visualisation of the abdominal organs.

Gynaecological/ Pelvic scan

Detailed images of the pelvic organs are obtained using high frequency ultrasound.

It enables us to check the uterus, endometrium, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

It is used in the following situations:

• Lower abdominal pain & bleeding
• Pelvic masses. Such as fibroids, ovarian masses or cysts.
• Location of  IUCD's (coil)
• Irregular & post-menopausal bleeding- for assessment of the endometrium.
• Ammenorrhoea & infertility- to diagnose polycystic ovaries.
• Ovarian cancer screening is recommended:
•                     - annually or bi-annually for all post-menopausal women.
•                     - annually for ladies with a history of ovarian cancer.
•                     - annually for ladies who have had many cycles of ovulation stimulation.

Colour Doppler blood flow measurements are also performed if necessary.

The scan is  performed abdominally and/or vaginally.
