Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

An AAA occurs in the body’s main artery, the aorta, were it passes through the abdomen. Fatty deposits, hardening of the arteries, a defect since birth, or an injury can cause a weakness. Over a period of time the artery wall thins and balloons, similar to how an old worn tyre may bulge.

A normal aorta measures less than 30mm in diameter. An aorta measuring more than 30mm is considered to be an aneurysm.

The aim of screening is to detect an aneurysm, monitor it and if necessary enable it to be operated on before it reaches a stage when it is likely to rupture.
